Phil Samuelsson decided to sign with the Penguins and forgo his final years of eligibility. There is some good news though. Brian Dumoulin and Chris Kreider will return.

Samuelsson's early departure is a real surprise in that he is more in need of development than any of the other regular players, in my view. Dumoulin is a much more polished and complete defenseman, and a better skater. Samuelsson had a bit more size (but rarely remembered to use it). Perhaps that's what appeals to the Penguins (in addition to his genes). I predict a minimum of two years of AHL development from Phil before he sees any NHL ice time.
