Report: BC hires Christian

The latest. I will wait until official word from BC. Lots to digest.

a truly puzzling hire and chain of events. i refuse to believe anything reported by Blauds and will wait for school confirmation. if all we did was listen to the media, Donahue would still be coach per the Thamel report.

i don't understand how Christian is even a candidate. he's been a middling head coach for a decade, has no affiliation with any big time programs, is not known as being a good recruiter, and truly flamed out in one job (TCU). he recruits a ton a JuCo guys (a no guy at BC). very confused. still holding out hope for Dooley or McCarty.

I hope it's not Christian just to put Blauds and his sanctimony in his place.

This is truly pathetic

If this is true, I think there's two ways to interpret the hire and Bates using the Daz hire as color.

1. Optimistic: Bates knows what he is looking for, parses all of the options, uses all the information in front of him to hire the RIGHT guy. Not the sexy pick, the splash, but who he truly thinks is the best fit for the program. After year 1, it looks like this strategy has succeeded with football and we should give him the benefit of the doubt with basketball.

2. Pessimistic: Bates (or the admistration who is pulling the strings) totally undervalues Boston College sports. Despite being told by various advisers/boosters NOT to hire Daz, he still did because Daz was the safest choice to bring the program from shambles to mediocre/respectable. Bates got extremely lucky that Daz was able to reenergize the program in year one on the back of an all-star running back, strong O-line and conservative game plans. Who knows what happens going forward? Likewise, Bates has now seen BC basketball as a perennial bottom-half team that could potential catch lightning in a bottle and make the tournament every 4-5 years. This is why Donahue almost got another year and it took so long to fire him. Bates just didn't think he had truly underperformed, because he thinks this is BC's baseline.

I truly hope it's the former, but I'm afraid it's the latter.

If there is any truth to the article Blauds wrote about the coaching search, then we got what we deserved.

No real spinning this hire.

Christian has been a mediocre for 12 seasons...8 of which were in the MAC

Even with tthe questions surrounding daz at least he came from a resume that included being a great recruiter and a coordinator at Florida under urban Meyer

No such bullet points on Christians resume.

This feels like a be careful what you wish for scenario in wanting Donahue fired because if this is the replacement I'm not even sure what the point was.

I don't understand the fit or connection at all. I would have rather taken a chance on McCarthy...at least there is upside with the risk or failure for him

Blauds just tweeted that the deal is NOT done. ESPN's Goodman says deal not done but leaning that way. There's hope.

FYI Blauds retracted the story.

I say lets fire BB and form a committee of posters to run the program.

Hearing that the hangup is the recruiting aspect for Christian. He has stated that he is getting a high school coach from Peoria, Illinois, which is a hotbed for basketball to handle the recruiting. After much investigating i couldn't figure out who it could be.

Also just realized that Jim Christians former colleagues, Geno Ford who is actually coaching in Peoria, illinois at Bradley University. Surely he can't be talking about him since he is not the HS coach from there that they are talking about?

I say ignore the Christians and hire some old guy who knows how to win. http://bostonherald.com/sports/college/college_basketball/2014/04/smu_defeats_clemson_to_reach_nit_championship_game

But didn't you guys hear? "Mark's like gum on a shoe when he's on a story!" Says so right on his website...

A committee of posters couldn't have handled this much worse than BB and company.

I still remember one of my senior rural colleagues, upon hearing that a white shoe firm hired by the local municipality lost the case with a large money judgment entered: "I could have lost that case for a lot less money".

So far the "experts" in BCAA are like the elephant which labored nightly and produced a mouse.

The way this thing has gone down it seems the sensible thing for BC to do. Is swallow its pride, admit a mistake and bring back Al. I think you have to reach pretty far to make the case that the people who have actually been interviewed are a better choice.

That's hysterical Hoib. I haven't laughed that hard in ages.

Just caught this now, and you probably won't see this, but here goes, Pearl,Kent,Sampson, all out of college ball for at least 3 years. The youngest is 52. Their records are similar to Al's. You just don't appreciate how good Al is, and you have allot of co. There, that's why the curse of Al continues into year 4 for BC ball. Glad I could give you a good laugh, we BC sports fans can certainly use all the laughs we can get these days.
