In-game comments post: NC State

The last home game for an unusual group of seniors. I hope they play with a little fire. I also hope Fadule or Smith do enough to win.

First, I'd like to thank all of our grad students and seniors. I'm not sure but some of these guys might return - and I want to thank them in case they don't.

Thank you Bobby Swigert, Harris Williams, Mehdi Abdesmad, Alex Howell, Steven Daniels, Justin Simmons, Connor Wujciak. You guys have given your all, for sure and I am so proud of you. You are among the best players in BC History.

Dave Bowen and roommates Jim Cashman and David Dudek, Mike Giacone (hope he comes back), Louie Addazio. There are some great stories here, and you gentlemen have bright futures. We could use the big men back on the OLine next year, but I don't know what the eligibility situation is.

A.J. Caruso, Sean Burke, Jake Wilhelm, Michael Fischer - unsung guys who have been a very important part of the team day in and day out. Congratulations, men.

I have probably forgotten or missed someone, so please pick me up.

Ok - all you young guys - get out there and help these veterans beat NCSU. Shock the heck out of everyone.

This is where the turnaround begins - today at Alumni Stadium, sparse crowd be damned. The fans are with you players, just bewildered by the "DIDB" - Dumb it Down Brad, and the offensive coaching staff, especially the OC and HC.

The fans will be watching and they will return to cheer you on.

Go BC - beat North Carolina State.

Well, by now the BC Administration should have taken note that the fans hve voted with their feet. A nice November day in Boston, and an empty stadium.

I feel bad for the players.

This is what happens when you disrespect your fan base.

Big Jack Krack said...

"Hello, this is Lawrence Kansas - is there anyone there?"

CT said...

Pretty much sums it up BJK.

Danny Boy said...

BJK, pure class as usual.

Now our boys just need to execute.

Facile knows he has no backup, right? Slide, man. Slide.

CT said...

I think we all too often overlook the time committment these guys and have given during their careers. The day-to-day grind in the Fall is impressive, esp considering the academic reqs at BC. It's literally burning both ends during the season and make-up classes in the summer.

Danny Boy said...

If there is one thing Dudek loves doing, it's cutting his route 1 yard short of the marker. Every single time.

Big Jack Krack said...

As usual, #26 doesn't make it to the first down marker, cutting his route 3 yards short. This has been going on all year, and therefore it is a COACHING problem.

CT said...

Fadule bowls people over with the help of that large chip on his shoulder.

WI_Eagle said...

Where's Swigert? Wasn't introduced for Senior Day -- haven't seen him for a few weeks now that I think about it -- he quit?

TGS said...

Amazing how much the outlook for this program's prospects has fallen since the first game. The curtain has been pulled back and BC fans have been forced to realize that yet another coaching staff and rebuild process is necessary before things can get better. Really a damn shame that Daz has turned out to be a farce, although it should have been evident after the PSU bowl game fiasco. Early in year I was going to go to the GT game in Dublin next year, now no way.

Big Jack Krack said...

I heard somewhere that we have a new FG holder today. So, yes, I'm curious about #10. He has overcome so much!

Danny Boy said...

I honestly don't think the long term outlook has changed. We knew the roster was unbalanced. We have between 2/3 and 3/4 of our roster as underclassmen. And then you build on that some serious injuries, and the experience level goes down even further. That's not an excuse, but it does act as a partial explanation.

I think 3 years is too early to make the determination. Hell, Spaz even got more than that. We always knew that year 4 was the make or break year, and I see some athletes on our team who just need to grow a little.

I'd be hard pressed to call the pin stripe bowl a fiasco. Heartbreaking loss, sure. But not a fiasco. The game against Arizona was a fiasco.

I guess I just don't see the rush to ride Daz out on a rail. Especially this year. With all the coaching vacancies, BC would probably be the 12th most appealing program, not a recipe for garnering the type of talent that the Internet would demand.

ATL_eagle said...

I think Fadule is passing well. I have hope.

Big Jack Krack said...

I'm frustrated, but still on board. If I still lived in Boston, I would help to drum up some enthusiasm for this program somehow.

We're going to Dublin, and I will renew my season tickets from 1,000 miles away. But I have dropped out of the Flynn Fund because of DIDB.

If I renew my Flynn Fund seats and parking, it won't be because of DIDB.

ATL_eagle said...

That's what happens when you start playing the subs at Corner and not enough pressure up front.

eagleboston said...

Game over. BC can't play from behind.

CT said...

John Johnson a sub? Or the safety?

ATL_eagle said...

I now want to see how the D responds. CT, Johnson is not a sub, but he is out of position.

Big Jack Krack said...

Just wondering if Smith could hit these holes quicker?

I feel sorry for #75. He's 50 to 60 pounds underweight. I really don't know what's going on with that. Addazio has made a big mistake relying on an undersized Freshman all year, and he has sold our program short.

ATL_eagle said...

We've got to get more pressure on Brissett.

eagleboston said...

Even the defense looks like shit today. Has this team just given up?

CT said...

NCSU has a good gameplan. Throw deep. Run speed sweeps away from the interior of our dline.

ATL_eagle said...

We need points on this drive.

eagleboston said...

At least now they will be forced to pass and get rid of the horrid running attack.

Big Jack Krack said...

I think the D is worn out, because we have played 10 straight games without a bye, and our offense goes 3 and out most of the time. There's no question that the D must be frustrated.

We miss Kamrin Moore, with a bad leg break (hope he's okay in the long run.)

I think the walk on experiment will end at halftime.

ATL_eagle said...

Thadd Smith saved the game.

eagleboston said...

Awesome run on first down for 2 yards. Great call!

Danny Boy said...

We need a turnover here. NC State has all the momentum. We need to steal some back.

ATL_eagle said...

Harrison Jackson gave up on that. Not a terrible decision by Fadule.

ATL_eagle said...

Finally BC brought pressure.

Danny Boy said...

The punt block should always be on. We never get any return anyways, let's just sell out on the block.

Danny Boy said...

And the play calling has reverted back to the unsuccessful. Where are the rollouts and crossing routes that have been working?

ATL_eagle said...

Addazio really needs someone on the staff to be in his ear when it comes to clock management.

eagleboston said...

Why are you running the ball Addazio?? Manage the flipping clock!

ATL_eagle said...

Not a great half, but I am not ready to throw in the towel.

TGS said...

BC fans in general are too patient and too forgiving, hence two major bowls in 84 years. When judging Daz, look beyond the minutiae and focus on the bigger issues. He plays to lose close and takes virtually no chances, he has a nasty habit of blaming the players and most importantly he is an "in the box" thinker. He is amazed that Fadule might be able to play a little because in his "take the easy way out" mentality, the kid must stink because he wasn't heavily recruited. Daz is a guy who would never play lower level prospects or draft picks if this were the pros (think Flutie, Tom Brady, etc.) because due to his insecurities about his own player evaluation talents, he relies on the "experts" to tell him whom to play. A 3 star kid will always play over a 2 star in his world even if the 2 star is killing it in practice. To do so would make guys like Daz have to think, and they don't like that.
This management philosophy works in bureaucracies where no one gives a crap, but doesn't work in the hyper competitive world of college or pro sports.

Big Jack Krack said...

Then why is Dudek in there so much, especially on 3rd down? We need our tall receivers in there, or freshman Walker.

mod34b said...

More uncompetitive football

Big Jack Krack said...

We are now Wake Forest in terms of fan support, enthusiasm (lack of) and expectation - sparse crowd to start, few returnees for the second half.

Nice going, Brad.

Big Jack Krack said...

#26 finally gets past the first down marker and drops the pass.

ATL_eagle said...

The Defense hasn't looked this lost all year.

Big Jack Krack said...

Time to experiment and have some fun.

mod34b said...

Dave Doeren started same year as Daz. He started with a crap team. Are people saying give Dave 5 years? No. He is a good coach and is burning the pants off don Brown

eagleboston said...

My God, Notre Dame is going to put up 60 on this defense. I guess the good thing is it will be such a lopsided game that no one will be watching.

eagleboston said...

You are running the ball with a 21 point deficit??

CT said...

Well, at least when we do lose to ND, we can all feel better that it was a road game.

eagleboston said...

That Miami game completely deflated Duke.

bc1900 said...

Can't wait to read ATLs thoughts for the ND game where he writes BC can win. This team couldn't go 500 in the MAC. Can you imagine if we played in the AAC, it would be even worse. You are watching the worst team of any power conference hands down.

eagleboston said...

Great job, Daz. Down 21 and you run 3 straight times into the line. Why so conservative? Does is really make a difference if the score is 21-0 versus 35-0? At least send the message to your team that they play to win, not to just keep the score down.

ATL_eagle said...

This is an actual drive!

ATL_eagle said...

The number of uncovered guys who made tackles for NC State speak to execution issue.

Big Jack Krack said...

2 down situation, according to the commentator. Ya think?

Big Jack Krack said...

#26 runs a short route once again.

CT said...

Gotta lead the WR so he can turn and run.

eagleboston said...

Why would you call a 4th down play where you throw the ball short of the 1st down maker?

CT said...

QB screwed up. Bad throw. Easy 1st down there with better throw.

mod34b said...

Hmmm. Fadule experiment not working out so good

CT said...

Don't you ever wonder how truly awful Howard is?

ccw said...

There's a reason Fadule isn't a scholarship FCS QB. Flute shouldn't be either. Great roster mgmt Daz.

Big Jack Krack said...

Did you ever think you would long for the return of the heretofore worst OC of them all, Gary Nyquil Tranquil?

Bring in Smith if he's cleared to play or bring in Flutie. I have had enough of the experiment.

bc1900 said...

They don't have a fbs qb, they don't even have an fcs qb. It doesn't matter who is playing. The rest of the team is awful too. Keep on hoping and praying and Rah rahing though. At least the stadium is empty, they can't hide that.

eagleboston said...

Might as well stick with Fadule. Flutie and Smith are even worse. Really wonder how different this season would have been had Wade not been hurt.

ATL_eagle said...

BC is giving up on the run too early.

Big Jack Krack said...

BC1900 - you are a stiff. Typical anonymous coward.

Most of us have earned the right to criticize the coaches and administration.

You have earned the right to be an as#%*l@.

eagleboston said...

Again, you are running the ball with a 21 point deficit? Despite the fact you have had zero success with the run? Amazing!

Big Jack Krack said...

Having said that, after shuffling and alternating Smith and Flutie all year, and now leaving Fadule in there is irresponsible. The HC is really showing his poor game day decision making ability.

And, oh by the way, let's power it up the middle at 3rd and 2 with an undersized line.

Danny Boy said...

I just want to know what the doom and bloomers propose. What are the solutions? Not the fantasy world so,unions, but the real world solutions that BB can actually implement.

We're coming off of 4-6 years of recruiting apathy, AD mismanagement, and general downward spiral. It takes time to dig out of that hole.

Instead of whining and complaining, let's talk actual solutions to our situation.

eagleboston said...

I can't believe we chased out TOB for this shit show. I will never complain about 8 and 9 win seasons and not being able to break through the ceiling again. BC had respect in those days. Now, we are irrelevant.

bc1900 said...

Because I see reality? How am I being a jerk, am I making things up. If you ran a business would you keep poor workers around because they are nice people and they try hard. You have earned the right BJK, only old timers deserve to be heard? Not many people on this thread have traits of being successful it seems. I guess you are all happy with being average to below average. This forum is for discussion and praise and criticism. So just chill out old man BJK. You must be one of these people whose persona is derived from their Internet presence and status on a meaningless forum. It's the old timers that hold BC back. Can't wait till all the Sully's and old guard are pushed out. Thank god we are almost there.

I taught for the Jesuits for many years. They hold the cards; do not expect them to show their hand-ever. Fr.Leahy would rather have us play Fordham and Holy Cross than Alabama and Texas A&M. Big-time football always seem to threaten control of the institution. The Jesuits have seen how it can happen.(Sorry Creighton) That's probably why there's no indoor practice facility at this point. I remember beating the likes of Alabama, Georgia, and Notre Dame. I was in Miami when Flutie threw his pass. And yes, it hurts not to be relevant any more. The whole football thing must seem more trouble than it's worth to Fr.Leahy. Never underestimate the Jesuits!

What's up with the weird organ music?

CT said...

Oline in the weight room.

Qbs grow 4 inches.

Send Fitch to Columbus for lessons.

mod34b said...

Danny boy :

1. Fire Daz.
2. Fire Steve Addazio
3. Fire Dazzler

He sucks. Not likely to improve.

Actual practical constructive suggestions.

Hope is not a strategy

Big Jack Krack said...

Keep recruiting good players, like last 2 years under current HC. Get a Division 1 QB, and truly bring us back to OLine U. We are at least 2 years away from that.

Fire/replace the OC; order the HC to stop meddling in the offense. Play a winning style of football.

Place the AD on probation. Continue to dumb down the schedule and you are fired.

Abolish Donor-Based Seating.

Parking and tailgating first come first served on a reasonable cost basis.

Welcome fans to the campus - without calling out restrictions first and foremost.

Tailgate anywhere you want on BC property. School may restrict grills and loud music in certain areas - otherwise open it all up.

Fire the Fenway Sports Group, if we still have those nitwits.

Get some marketing people with some expertise and enthusiasm. All un-sold tickets go to area high schools, and anyone else who expresses interest. Have this pre-planned out, and schools on board before hand. Get fannies into the seats.

Win some games.

bc1900 said...

JJ, I think you hit the nail on the head. I always thought the administration looked at sports as a necessary evil, basically to still get donations from old, delusional alumni. You either try to be good without selling out or you just don't participate.

ATL_eagle said...

A couple of dropped INTs today too. Not our day.

mod34b said...

Not our season

Danny Boy said...

Mod, who do you hire? What's your plan for eating daz's salary? Look at all the name brand programs around the country hiring coaches this year. How do you propose to poach a top tier coach from all of them? Even if I want Daz gone (and honestly, I think it's a year early), I don't see how we upgrade the coach this year. The environmental factors are heavily against us.

Big Jack Krack said...

Hey 1900 - I was just mad that you said the rest of the team is awful too. Actually, I have made many of the same points and observations you have, so we are in agreement on many things.

ATL_eagle said...

Nice catch by Smith.

Danny Boy said...

I know it's against a relaxed defense, but those plays should be part of the regular playbook. Every game.

mod34b said...

Terrible performance by Daz's Eagles

mod34b said...

DB. Good Qs.

But better than Daz should be easy to find.

Intermediate step: get a oC like Don brown who has full control over O

Look at UF and Temple Daz not good at OC.

Talent to run UF offense not at BC

Bravesbill said...

Eagleboston--BC would still be awful even if Wade didn't get hurt. Wade was not all that great either.

The Boston Series said...

Big Jack. 3:15 comment right on the money. Points to BC not a welcoming place for fans. Idiotic idea of limiting things to people with much money. BC should seek out a blue collar following. Like the free ticket idea to high school. You should be AD rather than Bates.

Daz is sad. Notice how TV focuses on him mostly because he is so inappropriate most times. He really seems confused during the games. Compare his demeanor with most winning coaches and you'll have a good idea why he is a loser.

I agree with other poster that Leahy really doesn't get it when it comes to sports. Tough days ahead for BC sports.

Profitec700 said...

Leahy does care about sports but just not in the way that we do. He doesn't care about W-L, CFP, AP rankings, etc., That's all mumbo-jumbo to this Jesuit. What he cares about is GSR and, if you don't know what that is and need evidence of this, head on over to the school website and hit the first item under BC News. That's what he wants out of the athletics department.

Napolean Bonaparte said...

Has Leahy ever been interviewed re his priorities and aspirations for the Athletic Department?

I think the problem is that the AD rarely feels the heat from anyone including Leahy. One of many things that needs to be changed. These guys make way too much money not to have expectations set and not to be carefully managed when those expectations aren't met. Good bosses don't micromanage but they definitely ride herd.

Napolean Bonaparte said...

If I was a major donor to the Flynn Fund or was considering becoming a major donor - I'd want to better understand the extent to which appropriate oversight within the university is being given to the athletic department and I would definitely want to know whether the President of the University (or whoever functions in a supervisory capacity over the AD) has the same or similar priorities re athletics at BC that I have. It might be interesting to better understand the management of athletics (including coaching personnel) at Notre Dame and Stanford - then compare it to how things are run at BC. There are very few sports programs at either such school that are not routinely highly competitive. That doesn't mean they don't have their blemishes from time to time - but overall they don't seem very tolerant of poor performance.
