Texas A&M helps BC

Tuesday saw the release of this season's first College Football Playoff rankings. Because there is still so much football left to play, the release serves more as a hype and controversy machine than actual forecast. And like clockwork, the Committee created just enough water cooler talk by including one-loss Texas A&M and excluding undefeated Washington. Even if this ranking changes, the controversy is great for a school like BC.

The format of the playoffs is inherently flawed. Narrowing down 128 teams into a four team playoff selected by committee is going to include all sorts of human biases. Those biases have hurt BC in the past and will continue to do so in the future. Even when we are really good, we are considered a nice little Cinderella story. We will never be considered a power program. Therefore we need a playoff format where Power 5 teams earn their way into the tournament. The ideal would be one slot for each Power 5 champion and three at large teams. That way when the stars align and BC wins the ACC, we are in. No controversy. No regional selection bias. No politicking. Win and you're in. For the playoff expansion and auto-bids to happen, we need plenty of controversy now. We need an undefeated Pac 12 Champion left out of the Playoffs.

Right now the Big 12 would vote for expansion and autobids. It would save their conference. If the Pac 12 joins that side of the argument, then there would be momentum. I don't know how the ACC would vote, but being still being smaller than the Big Ten and SEC in fans and revenue, it would make sense to vote with the other small guys.

The other benefit of all this controversy happening now is that BC really has nothing to lose. We are worried about getting bowl eligible, not being a playoff team. Ideally this mess sorts itself out in the next year or two, and then when we finally ascend again, we don't have to worry about committee votes and can just focus on winning games.

Did you really type the words "win the ACC" and "BC" in the same sentence. Bahahaha

Ever to excel baby. Two major bowls in 63 years, one every 31.5 years like clockwork. Since the last major bowl was 31 years ago, we are almost due.

Why are you commenting? Are you some sort of L'ville troll TGS? Till recently, BC was pretty darned good for a long time, and has a long history of being periodically very good.

some long term planning here ATL - so this will help BC when we are undefeated and ready for the national championship...

very long term....

can anyone think of a shit program that turned things around and was competing for championships in a 10 year period???

Boise State? Baylor? Stanford?

Blister, TGS has a valid point. Years of mediocre bowls and never winning s Big East or ACC championship speaks volumes.

Do some people actually think BC might compete for a playoff spot at any time in the near future?

Atl. is correct. The best way to get a fair playoff system is to assure conference champions of a spot. That could be accomplished with a six team playoff. The five Power 5 champs and one additional team selected. Have a group seed the six. #1 and #2 get byes into the semi final on New years Day. Team three plays team six on campus in early December with the winner going to the semi finals. Same for teams four and five. It is only a slight adjustment from the present system but eliminates some of the subjective, arbitrary aspects of the process. 2. A&M rated ahead of Louisville is a joke. They played in a bowl game last year. The Cards won and amassed 530 yards of offense with a freshman QB. Both teams have one loss. A&M to Bama by three touchdowns and the Cards to Clemson by three feet. A&M has two OT wins at home against mediocre opponents in Tennessee and UCLA. The SEC is way overrated. Florida number 10 in the country? They barely beat UMass.

Giving an automatic spot to the 5 Power 5 champs is a silly idea. Look at this year. Let's say Oklahoma, Baylor and West Virginia all lose another game. Would you want any one of those teams near the playoff? In 2011 UCLA was playing in the Pac 12 title game with a 6-6 record. If they had won that game would they have deserved a spot in the playoff?

How is a 6 loss UCLA team any different than a 20 loss bball team winning a conference tournament over the 1seed from a mid-major? There r 300 teams playing D1 bball. UCLA would get smoked. So? As it should be. Let's take partisanship out of it. Or no?

BC has a terrible football program, don't worry, they are never making the playoffs.
