Bruce Pearl on the schedule at the wrong time

I don't think BC put a ton of thought into playing Auburn Monday night. It was really driven by our shared apparel partner Under Armour. But the timing and Auburn's coach make things that much more interesting. Because Bruce Pearl could just as easily be coaching BC right now.

Based on his first two years back in college basketball at Auburn, there is no guarantee that Pearl would have turned BC around. Pearl has struggled to integrate transfers (sound familiar?) and win meaningful conference games. This year is off to a more promising start although they've played a favorable schedule thus far.

Although he was available when BC made their last coaching change, Pearl was never a real candidate. Despite his ties to the school, his NCAA show clause made him an automatic no with BC's leadership. And given what we know about Brad Bates now, I don't think he had the political instinct nor desire to get support for Pearl among BC's leadership. Plus, I don't know if Pearl would have wanted to return to BC as it was set up then. Why go to a Power 5 program where you will have to fight battles on budgets and admissions, when those same obstacles don't exist at another school offering you a job?

As BC decides what to do with the Athletic Department, the Athletic Director and our major coaches, the school has to think about Pearl and other coaches like him. Can we give those coaches what they want without compromising who we are? I believe we can. It will start a commitment from the Board. Then the AD change. Finally finding another Bruce Pearl.

I really think the timing was much worse the last time when BC got upset in the tourney because the press break was their Achilles Heel.

Pearl backers are delusional. Cheat at Tennessee and then find God at BC? Ok. Sure. Based on personal experience, I'm glad God was was taking upper campus off that year.

Let's not conflate two issues: not hiring a scoundrel and whiffing on another MAC hire. Two different things going on there.

Couldn't agree with you more Atl Eagle. But, as you know, the BOT's controls the university and Leahy serves at their pleasure. And we haven't heard a peep out of them notwithstanding the fact that it would be so incredibly easy for them (directly or indirectly through Leahy) to assuage the alums, students and fans by simply acknowledging the problems, their collective disappointment, BC's commitment to fielding competitive programs, being a fully contributing member of the ACC and committing to determine steps needed to best address the problems with details to follow. So I'm concerned that BC is following the stick your head in the sand approach that will only lead to worsening developments. I can only hope my concerns are misplaced and that a lot of work is going on behind the scenes.

My understanding of the charges against Bruce Pearl were minimal. He held a barbeque for recruits which was deemed illegal. Evidently, that was the sum of charges against him. Meanwhile, Ricky Ricardo down at Louisville furnishes hoes for his players and then says that he didn't know about it. Pearl was a scapegoat. There were no real charges against him. The big money players are overlooked by the NCAA. The uncle of Cam Newton received 400K to steer him to Auburn. Auburn and Newton both were deemed not to have known. It is called plausible deniability. Presidents use it and the NCAA uses it. The current charges against the French School are laughable. One athletic fringe employee helped athletes with their course work "without any acknowledged further influence" from others or the university. ND is then forced to vacate wins from two seasons which included one of 12-1. The NCAA is run by demons with Mark Emmert being the most proficient with a huge salary. His job is to generate money and not to implement justice. BC couldn't take Pearl because he has a "can tied to his tail" and BC would have been heavily scrutinized because of their high standards which are lacking in spades at both Louisville and Kentucky.

JBQ: The problem with Pearl wasn't simply having a recruit at a cookout. He got in trouble because he lied to Tennessee and the NCAA about the cookout, denying it ever took place. Plus, he told everyone at the cookout to lie about it as telling the recruit and his family to lie about it. Had he just fessed up, he'd probably still the coach at Tennessee. As usual, the cover-up is worse than the crime.

The big money players are overlooked by the NCAA and yet ND is over the barrel for a fringe infraction? ND is the big money player. Yet again, no sense. The world is not crying out for your logic.

Mississippi St was solicited for the $180k. Auburn probably paid more.

Pearl taped an old recruit who didn't sign with him, 25 years ago, trying to coerce him into saying the school he chose over Pearls' bought him off with a car/$$. Shadiest move in college sports that i have ever heard about.

John is correct - How does the U. of North Carolina get away with the most egregious act in NCAA history. The professors and ADMINISTRATION were aware of it !!! Why doesn't ND and all schools file a suit against the idiots at the NCAA???What a sad organization!!!!

The NCAA is pretty sad. The UNC debacle and it decision to terminate Penn St's probation early were unconscionable.

Just to be clear, the NCAA has not let UNC off the hook. UNC had a hearing before the NCAA Infractions Committee in late October. Apparently, UNC is seriously fighting the NCAA on this one and taking advantage of all possible means of defense. While the NCAA has a lot of faults, I don't think they are taking what UNC did lightly.
