VT hands BC another basketball loss

The team played with a little more effort, but were still way too sloppy and lost to Virginia Tech. What I found interesting is listening to Malcolm Huckaby. Here is ostensibly national analyst, yet he also happens to be a BC alum and a former BC radio analyst. Throughout the game he was openly and repeatedly critical of Eli Carter. Too many analysts have giving Carter a pass and said he's trying to do too much. Huckaby pointed out Carter's poor shot selection and sloppy passing. It doesn't make it any less frustrating to watch, but it gives me a little comfort that people close to the program are saying what needs to be said.

Owens dunk will make the highlight reels. He was ok. Clifford looked good and played hard near the basket. Milon was a disappointment. We've seen him make the shots. Let's hope for more consistency next year.

Huckaby's rise and other links

As soon as I heard Malcolm Huckaby on BC's radio broadcast last year, I thought he was going places. He's got the voice, the look and provides good analysis. Unlike a lot of analysts he's not just tossing our cliches, but actually making observations and using stats. It only took him one season with us to break into the ESPN family. I bet within two more years, he will be getting prime spots.


The Colts will now have BC guys at both Tackle spots now that they've signed Gosder Cherilus. In less than surprising news Notre Dame will join the ACC next season.

BC's growing army of talking heads

With Jared Dudley headed back to ESPN's First Take I thought is was time to look around at the growing wave of BC guys on sports TV and radio.

Malcolm Huckaby. I was pessimistic about Malcolm taking over for Bill Ebben. Fortunately for BC fans, Malcolm has been a nice addition to the radio team. He's got a great voice and he can desibe the plays well. He's also able to work in more neuvo basketball lingo related to stats and pace. He and Meter have good chemistry too. I also think Huckaby is the right sort of age for the job. He's played in the modern big tourney, AAU era but also is a bit older so he has an informed perspective on players and coaching.

Tim Hasselbeck. Tim's been on TV for a while, but seems to get more and more exposure each year. He's actually become quiet good. Tim gives good insight and is not afraid to criticize. I've also heard him on ESPN Radio throughout the winter and he's even good there. At this point I think the sky is the limit for Tim. I could see him grow to become ESPN's key guy on various NFL shows.

Mike Mayock. Mayock doesn't have Kiper's brand yet, but he is also becoming closely associated with the NFL Draft. Some joke about his speech impediment, but I must not be hearing it. I like Mayock and appreciate his candidness on prospects. This fall he'll also be part of the NFL Network's play by play team on Thursdays. (And he's also on NBC's Notre Dame broadcasts.)
