What Georgia Tech fans are saying about the Ireland trip [unscientific research]

Living in Atlanta, I know lots of Georgia Tech fans and listen to plenty of Atlanta sports radio. Do you know what Jacket fans are saying about the trip to Ireland? Nothing. There is no buzz and little excitement among my crowd. I only know of one person going. Now admittedly, I don't know every Georgia Tech fan in the world and I know that there will be plenty of Jacket supporters over there. My point is that playing the game in Ireland against BC has not broken into the wider sports discussion.

Georgia Tech's struggles to get attention mirror many of BC's issues. While Atlanta might not be as passionate about their professional teams as Boston fans, the Jackets compete with the Falcons and Braves for attention, plus the Georgia Bulldogs and all the SEC fans in the area. If you listen to local Sports Radio, you hear much more on Georgia and the other Top 25 matchups opening weekend than you do about Ireland.

When there is talk, the consensus seems to be that GT must come back with a win. That travelling that far only to lose to a winless ACC team would be a demoralizing way to start the season. One thing of note about the little I have read and heard: GT is practicing and scrimmaging early in the morning so that their body clocks are ready for the 7 AM kickoff.

Just because there isn't much early excitement about the game doesn't mean it is a bad idea or lost cause. I am glad BC tried something new and the unique timeslot on the opening weekend helps raise awareness. It will probably be BC's highest rated day game this season. But the general apathy around the game here is just a reminder that if BC ever wants to be top of mind in Boston (or nationally) they need to win more.

Let's hope our kids adjust to the time change. Over the years we always seem to come out flat whenever we play on the west coast. But this is first game and GT has to contend with the same problem. Daz should refuse to feed our OL until the game is over and tell them steaks if we win - sprouts and couscous if they lose.

Won't 7 AM EDT be 12 noon in Dublin?

Yeah, the game kicks off at noon in Dublin which will be about 730AM on the east coast. ESPN has game time at 7:30AM.

In a way it still makes sense to be practicing early here though. Gets the body used to the time it will be playing.

Do we know when the team is heading to Dublin. I would imagine its this weekend to have a solid week of prep and adjustment.

Nappy

Unlike a west coast trip, both teams will have to make the adjustment.

I now live in a golf community near Athens, 50 miles from the GT Campus. While most folks around here are UGA fans, of course, there are quite a few GT fans and alums too. My golf buds are very much aware of this game, and most know someone who is going.

Tech fans are being a little quiet right now, although I think they are optimistic about this being a good rebound year. But to think of the Yellow Jackets going to Dublin for an ACC game to start the season - and losing - that possibility isn't something they want to acknowledge.

I have heard that GT fans may outnumber BC fans at the game - wow! If that's true, it's pretty bad IMHO.

I have seen that the GT contingent (team, staff, band, cheerleaders, etc.) is flying out August 31st to arrive Thursday morning, September 1st. At least that was the plan under recently departed AD Bobinski. But since he was originally doing it "on the cheap", I know the airline has been upgraded, but don't know if the date to fly out is the same. Coach Johnson was very unhappy about the original arrangements, and I don't blame him at all.

I haven't seen anything about BC's plans, but they had better fly out NLT August 31st.

Go BC - beat GT

File this under "You can't make this up" category.

GT has hired a search firm to help find an AD. The company's senior executive director, Turnkey Search, based in Haddonfield, NJ is none other than Gene DeFilippo.

Cut the s*&t.

Concerning BC's arrangements, I have been unable to find out anything more than "the team is staying 1/2 hour from Dublin."

Since My wife and I are also staying 1/2 hour from Dublin, I am thinking that it might be the same place, in the Marriott family.

Powerscourt Hotel, Autograph Collection, Powerscourt Estate
Enniskerry, County Wicklow, A98 DR12 IE.

When ND played Navy in 2014, they took over the entire hotel (something like 440 rooms/suites.) I'm hoping that we do the same thing.

Go BC - beat GT.

Jack, in case you missed it, GDF (remember how to spell his last name: 2 P's for 'piss poor' and one 'L' for loser Gene DeFilippo) was the search consultant for Michigan's AD gig too.

We were hopeful GDF would relieve us of Bates. Obviously, it never happened.

Could imagine if BC hired that dope to find a replacement for Bates??

Great explanation for the spelling, Mod - LMAO, except the clown sent us on a death spiral in football and (M and W)basketball - which I and all resent, because of the difficulty getting back up to where we were and where we should be.

Hey, not to bring any kind of politics into this, but those of us who are going to the game might want to recall and bone up on the BC "oral history - Belfast Project", which wasn't really a properly conducted or sanctioned oral history at all. There might be a dig or two directed at us, and I think we should be ready to defend BC from those pissed at the school for promises made and not kept, etc.

GT is an afterthought in their hometown. Atlanta is UGA/SEC 365 days a year. The guys on the radio will do a few mins on Tech and then say "hey, Tech fans, don't complain, we mentioned you." To be fair, the Tech fanbase is quite a bit different than the SEC. But part of the lack of buzz (sorry) in Atlanta is the opponent. BC is on another planet as far as the fans down here are concerned. A bad BC? Even worse. This is a winnable game. Would be a nice start to get the confidence up.

Georgia fans know who Boston College is we have beaten them the last two times we played them. That is why they are quiet. Out of respect.

Respect? That is completely wrong and out of touch. Just stop. You don't live it and you're not from it. It shows.

I work with two Georgia grads. One undergrad and one MBA. When you have the fortitude and facts to back it up they quiet down quickly.

Hahah. You think you know everything. Wrong bitch.

I hope Father Callinan turns into Tom Waddle. His first year he couldn't catch a cold if he was riding the MBTA in January. Last year was lost but he had a few receptions. We will see.

You know about BC 80's point shaving being alluded to in that movie, right?

Maurie's wig shop. Pop Pop.

mod34b said...

know about Henry Hill etc.. but did not realize the Maury wig shop scene was about BC. just watched clip.. talking about points on a college basketball game... that was a BC game?

Knucklehead said...

Yeah the 78-79 season Rick Kuhn was indicted/sentenced for point shaving. 5-10 games were involved.

In the movie they something to the effect of "running numbers up in Boston" then get in the car and deal with Maury.

mod34b said...

yes, know all about the point shaving scandal....but appreciate the bit of trivia about Good Fellas
