Bowling

It wasn't pretty -- the season or the game -- but BC did enough to win the game and go to a bowl.

Congrats to the team for pulling it out.

I will have more Sunday night.

Congrats to the kids. The bad news: Daz will be back next year.

JBQ said...

Daz being back is just not an acceptable option. Institutionalized mediocrity is just not good for BC.

Bravesbill said...

Crap sandwich. Daz is guaranteed at least another 2 years.

Geezer eagle said...

What can we say, JBQ? Mediocrity has been institutionalized at BC. Management at BC will be perfectly content with 6 or 7 win teams with this bum.

I'm not paying $300 a ticket to watch them play in the tiolet Bowl. I went to the Pinstripe Bowl and had an amazing time even though they lost, however this year they'll probably play out in the West Coast and play some garbage MAC team. BC fans won't show up and continue their reputation of lousy turnout. Hopefully they can play a bowl up in the Northeast so at least the fans can show up. However I wont pay anymore then $50 per ticket since the Bowl will be garbage.

BB - 1 year guaranteed, not 2. NOT!!!

But it is victory.... that will lead to more mediocrity....

I could just stop with this Kurt Vonnegut quote "and so it goes...."

but i'd rather sat this KV to BB, SD and BOT (can't say it to a Jesuit): ""Why don't you take a flying fuck at a rolling doughnut? Why don't you take a flying fuck at the mooooooooooooon?"

My Prediction: BC will play in the St. Petersburg Bowl against University of Memphis.

Khead, I'm on the Trump transition team and ham sadly wasn't on the menu at Mar A Lago.

Geezer eagle said...

I see them in Detroit versus a midlevel MAC opponent. There will be nobody in the stands. BC wins and Dazoshit gets another five year extension.

Unknown said...

I look forward to what Anthony Brown brings to the table next year. Supposedly he's the best Quarterback on the roster and according to Addazio should be a star in the coming years.

I miss the times when NC was relevant across all major sports and was considered a great academic school. Now is it is picking at the carcass of greatness sinking into liberal ineptitude.

Max said...

BC - damn fat fingers

Bravesbill said...

It's unfortunate to be referred to with the same initials as Brad fucking Bates. In other news, the basketball team has managed to turn an 8 point lead at half into a 9 point deficit in the second half. Another loss.....and so it goes.

Unknown said...

Unfortunately BC's high academic standards hold them back from competing with the top nations in the country. BC and Clemson were evenly matched when BC first arrived in the ACC, now BC can't play a top 25 school without getting blown out. Hopefully the $200 million project that includes an indoor practice facility will attract better recruits. It's frustrating to see BC not play in a major Bowl especially when teams like UConn and Wake have played in major bowls this past decade, Wake being the Orange Bowl and UConn being the Fiesta Bowl.

Geezer eagle said...

Liberal ineptitude. I like that. TGS, give that boy a bone.

Good for the players for preservering through a tough season. But not good for the program if that means the DAZZLER is back. They have not been particularly fun or interesting to watch, particularly on offense. Conservative coaching style (grounded in lack of confidence in his roster) is boring, HC does not appear to be a respected or charismatic leader, and as a result, he won't recruit well and BC will be undermatched talentwise in ACC until he leaves.

I know this was a football post, but am interested to see how hoops team progresses this year, and a little more hopeful about future of that program based on level of recruits attracted. Downside is ACC is a BEAST in hoops, and despite what DAZ says, merely decent in football (Big Ten, SEC are stronger, amongst others, and we'd even struggle in Houston's conference which is not even Power 5)

Hoops team looked good in the 1st half tonight against Richmond. Jerome Robinson is a foundational piece for the next couple years. Turner is decent, needs to stay aggressive throughout game....gets passive for stretches. Need others to step up. Tava is OK, a glue player, not sure he can provide a lot more. PG Ty Graves can give more and needs to be pushed to do more on offense; he is catching and distributing too quickly, without being a threat to score or drive/dish and keep defenders honest. Too easy for opponent D to key on Robinson right now.

Biggest problem right now is BIGs are just not good enough at this point. IMHO, I thought Reyes played pretty well and deserves more minutes than he is getting. Tava is adequate, Jeffers doesn't give them much yet. Plus. Reyes has some length that the others don't

Richmond is not a bad team. would have liked to seen them hang in there a little longer. Realistically looking for baby steps this year. Step 1 - a leader emerges (Robinson) has already happened. Step 2 - tougher defense needed ...remains to be seen, but spells of decent D, and better than last year. Step 3 - better coaching and schemes on offense and defense --- not sure that is happening, at least so far. They have some decent athletes, much more so than in the past -- would like to see more pressure defense...not just when down 10 and 5 mins to go. Need some variety on offense, their current motion offense sets are the same pretty much every time down the court. Would like to see them mix in something different than a perimeter based, pass and pick away from the ball scheme, with an occasional entry past to the post (AND, we need a player who can score consistently in the post).

Hope that they can bounce back and gain some confidence going into ACC. Richmond is a decent team, and should have beaten Maryland. Still think that BC can pull of 3 - 4 wins in ACC this year, and if they can have some competitive losses against the top teams, think that will give them some confidence going into the following year when Robinson and Turner and juniors.

Accidentally posted this on the in game thread:
I read this board regularly and I think many of us have become too jaded. It was a good win and a step forward. If we can't at least acknowledge progress then perhaps we are not true fans.

That said, BC needs to be more competitive against the better teams in the ACC. Not sure what the missing ingredient is...coaching, players, recruiting or just plain luck but winning half of their ACC games and getting to an overall 7-5 record should be the minimum standard of success. At least they earned their way to a bowl at 6-6.

A new AD is clearly on the way in. Daz will have a short leash and might not even see next year but there is no doubt that the players fought through a touch season to improve on last year. Give them some credit.

knucklehead said...

Prove it.

Max said...

Credit? For beating Wagner? UMass? Buffalo? For getting absolutely hammered vs Clemson, VT, FSU.
Football is a simple game at the end of day. Who wants it more. Not sure what the issue is at BC currently but it needs to change - through admin, coaching or recruiting. Or all
Success is a a choice; through desire and commitment. I don't see it. No matter what shitt@ bowl they accept

Lucky to win. Terrible offensive game plan/plays. Very easy to defend BC. WF gave the game to BC.

Great defensive effort.

Players won in spite of offensive coaches.

1661_Comm said...

STL - I am not a "true fan" if that means not be objective about what I am seeing. Happy for the players, but they need a new coach. He is not getting it done.

Objectively, they beat two half decent teams this year, Wake and NC State, the other four wins were against not very competitive teams. That's better than last year. But the absolute capitulation to top ACC teams more than offset that (49-0, 56-10, 52-7, 45-7). That just cannot happen, and has never happened before at BC to my recollection. That starts at the top, with coach saying we can't play with these teams because they are too good. Sotty coach, if that's true then these teams (LVille, Clemson, Va Tech, FSU) shoudl have been blowing out the rest of their mid-level ACC competition, which was NOT the case.

This group needs leadership and new schemes, and more reinforcements / better recruiting. Change is needed, it seems obvious to this BC fan.

BCCBS said...

I'm happy for the players in that they earned themselves another win in spite of Addazio being their head coach. But I'm having trouble considering this a "good win" or "progress". I saw many of the same issues (little creativity in play calling, clock management, mental mistakes which I really put on coaching, etc). The fact that Addazio touts qualifying for a bowl as evidence of his successful turnaround effort at the Heights (post game on field interview) is itself a sign he needs to go. 64% of FBS schools will play in a bowl this year and BC will only be among their ranks thanks to the three patsies Max referenced. The Wagner win shouldn't even count toward the 6 qualifying wins given it's in the FCS.

As a side note, did folks catch a couple of players give Addazio the gatorade shower after the game? I hope they were doing that ironically.

Another aside: the BC basketball team excluding Robinson - who admittedly looked very good - shot 28% from the field against Richmond. That's quite the feat.

Unknown said...

Turner looked decent also. Admittedly, I'm trying to be optimistic..... think that Reyes and Graves and Bowman all have some potential too. All except Reyes are perimeter players. They need add a four star recruit to play down low to be more competitive in ACC.

It took Jim O'Brien a few years to land Billy Curley and the 3 guards (Huckaby, Eisley, Abrams) that went to the Elite 8. Think that Christian and Spinelli have done well recruiting wise so far, but need to show some success to draw add'l recruits.

P.S. That wasn't Gatorade.

The team ended up 6-6 but given who they won against it felt more like 3-9. The real problem is that we are "competitive" vs fellow bottom feeders in the ACC but the blowouts are crippling both to the fans & to the long term perception of the program. VT is not a team you lose 49-0 to. The losses to the top 10-15 teams just show that Daz is a coach who can only win with vastly superior athletes that mask his weaknesses as a coach. At Florida, with Tebow he clearly did that. BC will not compete with the ACC in terms of pure Athletes but we should except a smarter/more disciplined team that makes up for the athletic gap. That was the game plan throughout the Oughts (0's) and it got BC to #2 in the country my junior year with Matt Ryan.

I gave up on Addazio after sitting through the FSU game last year and having to tell my fiancee that football wasnt normally this boring. I thought Spaz was the bottom but Daz has made BC football unwatchable, not to mention the outrageous tailgating policies that ensure people dont go to the game outside of diehards and current student parents. When I can't get my roommates from 2009 to come to Boston from Franklin, MA and Clinton (Argh!), MA because of the BS, what does that say?

Geezer eagle said...

Meanwhile, how's the hockey team doing? There is zero coverage of ice hockey in Atlanta.

JERZeagle said...

coach addazio selling this win like it really meant something. we lucked into a win - just like at nc state - with having a deplorable offensive performance.

i physically cringe at the sales job our HC deploys in every interview. completely framing the discussion. he thinks he is clever, but he is so lucky the BC administration either: a. purposefully buys it for some other ulterior motivation; or b. literally just doesn’t care whatsoever. either way it is just pathetic.

oh and the landry positivity after the game just reeks of "i just improved my draft performance by a round, so therefore I am going to say the right things because this interview will be reviewed by NFL scouts. *smile for the camera!*"

When McGovern gave his acceptance speech at the 1972 convention he entitled it Come Home America. BB should be giving a speech Come Home Kelly. If there is any truth to rumors of the ND coach looking around BC would be the perfect landing spot. Daz's record in his last 18 games against Power 5 teams is 2-16. Averaging a 1-8 record yearly is a total failure. Getting blown out five times in a year is a total failure. Having the worst offense in the conference is a total failure. 2. Where are the apologists for the SEC? What is the SEC's record this year against the Big 10 and the ACC? The Big 10 is 1-0 vs. the SEC. The ACC is 6-3 vs. the SEC. Combined the vaunted storied SEC is 3-7 vs.those two conferences. A 30% winning percentage. Is that dominance or superiority? Completely overrated. The ACC also has a 3-1 record with the Big 10 this year. The ACC is a combined 9-4 with the SEC and Big 10. No one contests that the ACC has the best QBs of any conference. So add that to the 9-4 record and tell us how the ACC is weaker than the SEC or Big 10 this year? Some shills for the SEC excuse the poor record overall to the weaker Eastern Division. But the SEC West is 0-2 vs. the ACC and 0-1 vs. the Big 10. How can a division go winless against two rival conferences 0-3 and be thought of as a strong division? ESPN said that the SEC East was the worst division of the Power 5. ESPN also called them woeful. If one watched the games yesterday you would know why. Not only is the East bad but the West is winless and just as inept. They have nothing outside of BAMA. It really is BAMA and the thirteen dwarfs. Look up their road records. Is the 2nd best team a seven win LSU? Pathetic.

The Daz "aren't I great" and the "future is bright" bs has started.....

The faith that people inside had in us has been unwavering. That means a lot to our football team. Starting from the top of our university. Unwavering faith in our football program. That's what it takes to build and grow for the future."

"We wanted to get bowl-eligible and that is what we are. How you get there is never exactly what you wanted. We had one blimp. We were not bowl-eligible last year. A lot of programs come in and they don't get to a bowl game until their fifth year if they are lucky. This will be our third in our fourth year. That's a credit to these players.

This was so important to get our program back into another bowl game. It's never text book for how things go. Sometimes you go to two bowl games early and then everyone forgets. We have a lot of work to do. We are still doing it. We are not done yet. I like the future.

There is one thing when you are going and you are worried about replace the guys you will be missing. That's what I worried about in year three. Now we are starting to build for the future. You feel good about the guys who are coming back. It's a process right now and it can be painful at times. But to be able to do that and be bowl-eligible is great."

BC 2016

Category 1 = elites - 0-4 blown out in historically bad losses. BC could nt compete
Category 2 = cupcakes - 4-0. These 4 OOC teams are all among the worst in FBS and a complete joke.
Category 3 - middle-schmiddle 2-2. (Wake, NCSU, Syr, GT). In competitive games, just go .500 and all is good.

= a Bad bowl (not Daz lost his first 2 bowls to .500 teams)

BC 2017

category 1 elites (VT, Clem, LV, FSU and ND) 0-5 expect to lose all of these games
categoy 2 cupcakes - 2 MACs, UConn . 3-0 Cupcakes are delicious
Category 3 - Rising Schmiddle - (Syr, NCS, Wake, UVA) - 2-2?? 1-3??

another bad bowl if things go well

No way is Brian Kelly going to look at BC. Oregon would be much better landing spot for him, or Houston.

BC needs to be realistic (and maybe that is the only place where they are more realistic than this BLOG when it comes to football), our only options are up and coming coaches, we will not draw established coaches here, unless they are retreads who are on the back nine of their career.

And we an AD who is smart enough to discern the good ones, and good fits (Skinner, Tom O'Brien, Jim O'Brien) with those who can't make the step up to ACC (i.e. Addazio, Steve Donahue).

To be clear, I am no fan of Daz and believe we need to make change. The new AD will not be beholden to Daz as "his guy" so I believe his days are numbered but I have heard that the players generally support Daz and they did improve upon last year so he might see another year...hence the short leash comment.

I'll admit that my true fan comment was a bit out of line and thrown in for some hyperbole but it was more a reaction to the fact that several commentators seemed more disappointed with the win than happy for the team and the players. Winning is good...enjoy the moment.

You have to assume that Charlie Strong will sit back and enjoy his $5 million a year or whatever his contractual buyout was. (NOTE: other schools seem to agree on a specific buyout figure in the initial contract--not having to negotiate later. BC would do well to emulate this tactic).

If Charlie Strong were willing, would BC take him? Strong runs a "clean" program, emphasizing on and off field development of his players. He recruits well. Strong is flexible on offense, being more than willing to use a "spread" offense.

His last two (2) years at Louisville were stellar. His three (3) years at Texas have been inconsistent.

What do the "fans" on here think about Charlie Strong?

Jeff Brohm is perfect....only question is how long would he stay? If we can keep him for 5 years, we'll be back on track and it will be a lot easier to replace him, with a program on the rise, and presumably competitive in ACC.

BC Admin is not proactive however, and with Brohm a hot commodity, someone should sweep him up soon. Was getting interest last year at this time, don't see him passing up opportunities again this year.

We need to be aggressive at the right time for the right people, and this is one of those times. I am saddened by the lack of confidence, initiative, judgment, and grit of the athletic and university administration when it comes to athletics.
