The arms race

I retweeted this Saturday, but thought it deserved its own post.
Woody is right. This sort of thing is an enormous misuse of funds. The costs of those flat screens should go directly to the players. Seeing this sort of misguided largesse is also a reminder BC is taking the wrong approach.

Publicly BC's leadership has been against official payments to players. The only problem is players are getting paid illegally and through stupid benefits like 10K flat screens on their lockers. BC -- because of our revenue and our philosophy -- will never be able to keep up with all this nonsense. The indoor facility is nice but it won't have the bells and whistles the power programs have. So instead of keeping up with the Joneses, BC needs to argue for a true salary program for players and true direct benefits. It is only fair and will correct the market. Currently we have an inefficient black market where things like high-tech lockers are considered a good investment. If players were allowed to negotiate or get a salary, they would probably take much less cash into their pocket and hang their things on a hook!

BC Hall inductees and other links

BC announced eight new members of the Varsity Club's Hall of Fame. The headliners are Damien Woody and Mike Mottau.

The ACC announced their preseason All Conference team and there were no Eagles to be found. I hope that the postseason team looks a little different.

BC is still in good position for Connecticut OL prospect Lucas Niang..

FoxSports asked a few questions about BC's season.

Big winner: Damien Woody

If you've watched ESPN the past week, you probably noticed Damien Woody's return. He's been in TV seclusion since June while he competed and filmed the NBC show The Biggest Loser. Because of the ongoing nature of the show, he cannot reveal the final results of his weight loss, but it is clearly significant. Many former football players struggle with their weight after their playing days are done. I am glad to see Woody take control of his. This loss will clearly improve his healthy and has already helped his media career.

Recruiting news, hockey video and other links

BC is nearing its scholarship limit with this recruiting class, but there may be room for DB Terrell Chestnut. The four star player was a Pitt commit but the coaching change there has opened the door for new programs. Miami is coming hard and his trip to BC is tentative.

Here is a dorm room tour with a few BC hockey players. Hockey players never change...and I mean that in the most endearing way.

Damien Woody won't be part of a Jets playoff run. New York placed him on injured reserve with an Achilles injury. That is a tough injury to recover from at any age, but will be a real tough road at 33. Let's wish him the best.

Atlanta has been shutdown this week because of four inches of snow. I would hate to see how we would react to the type of storm that just hit BC.
