Spaz spin and other links

This quote in the Globe from Spaz ruffled a few feathers on the message boards:

“Hopefully it’s not a 76-second knockout.’’

One quote doesn't define a season or a coach, but I think that quote coupled with a few others reinforces the belief that Spaz (at times) plays not to lose. This game isn't for a championship, but it can set a precedent for the Spaz era. Let's hope the guys come out fighting.

Regardless of their record, Spaz still thinks very highly of USC.

NECN ran a fluff interview with Gene. There are some nice shots of campus though...

Judge a coach by his results on the field, not by two-second sound bytes in the press.

Totally agree BCdoubleeagle. So spaz is a little self-deprecating? Who cares. Spaz has coached the BC defense to be consistently excellent on a national level and took a mess of a program at the start of the season and righted the ship. I think Spaz is actually a pretty calming guy, which is the right situation for right now. I think too it probably fits in with the BC mentality, of working harder and playing smarter than the other guys. Of course, if it is a 76-second knock-out, he'll have problems....

Get rid of that accent, Gene - woof.

I hope you have prepared the team Frank, and I hope you have given Tranquill many peptalks.

Methinks the Trojans are waiting for Harris up the middle.

BCDouble, Blist,

A little "team" (not self) deprecating is fine, he does a little too much of it.

Lets judge him by his results: some of the most abysmal performances in the history of BC football.

Lets just make sure the sounds bytes don't affect the results on the field.

FYI: Eagle Deli is supposed to be on Man V. Food on the Travel Channel at 7:00pm ET (Wed 12/23). Happy holidays everyone!

Saw that Eagles deli episode - a lot of fun.
Andrew - TOB had some of BC's worst performances ever (the Syracuse BE BCs berth loss), even Jags had some bad ones. cowboy jack had some too.
What do you want him to say - we're gonna kick USC's ass? That'd be 10 times as stupid, b/c it would motivate USC. Maybe spaz is doing rope a dope. 8 and 4 with no experienced QB, a decimated defense etc, etc ad naseum - good year. YOu make of it what you want.

The Spaz comment in the Globe that I'd rather not hear him say out loud was something very close to "we have a chance to be a pretty good football team in two years". Maybe he said "very good", and no reasonable fan would argue that they're very good now, but what does that comment mean to your Juniors? Hardly the motivation you might need going into the off season. I appreciate a straight shooting coach, but some of that realism needs to be better balanced by optimism and enthusiasm.

Under-promise and over-deliver. The Spaz quote is no big deal.

atl, give it up, that loser jags is long gone and spaz is here to stay. the sooner you realize this the better.

the more our coaches say stuff like that the less we can complain when we are constantly "underrated."

Mod, I am afraid you're right but hope you're wrong. I like Spaz a lot personally, I just dread a return of the TOB-style. However, we seem to have somewhat cornered the market on bright, overachieving kids. Spaz is a tough, blue-collar kinda coach, so maybe the machine keeps running. Let's give him a break for now and see what happens.

Andrew said...

I'm going to assume Spaz doesn't talk like that to the team, but still, they see what he says to the media and that can't please them, it would not please me. He needs to instill confidence and fire them up.

I understand he is cut from the TOBY cloth and he isn't Jags, and results matter most. Lets just get those results and I'll be happy.

And 8-4 with what we have is an OK year. The ACC was absolutely horrendous and we won many tight games.

I don't love the comment but it's a complete non-issue. I'm more concerned w/ how the team plays on Sat.

I know it's Christmas Eve but I can't wait for the special Valentine's Day issue of this blog where we can analyze clips of Jags best press conferences.

Good video but the opening scene with the two of them in lounge chairs, Gene looking a little too relaxed and her looking like a revved up Cougar in her skirt and stilletos had the makings of a bad porno.

Dan said...

I'm also a little nervous about all the press leading up to this game about USC's motivation. Every ESPN preview and now the front page on Rivals talks about how this is a letdown for USC and they won't show up. I hope they're not giving USC a chip on the shoulder. That's our playbook.

Terri: Many have credited the arrival of strength and conditioning coach Loscalzo with BC's succes keeping up in the ACC. Can he also be credited with helping you achieve these biceps (squeeze) Bowm Chick Bowm Bowm

Gene: (Insert odd GDF accent) So you're an alum? I don't believe you. Maybe we can go back to my office and you can prove you're really a screaming eagle. Bowm Chicka Bowm Bowm

Thanks mod34b. Maybe that'll spike Dan's evolving porno plot from continuing.

You guys would make terrible porn directors. The alum comment in my script was clearly from Gene to the reporter. At the end of the posted video she states that SHE is an alum.

C'mon guys keep up!

Agree with BCDoubleEagle entirely, Spaz's defense, not Jags offense or TOB's clock killing 3rd and 8 draw plays, has been the key to the recent era of success at BC. We've never been able to run it up against quality opponents, but we've consistently kept quality opponents from running it up on us. Most of our blowouts have actually been the result of offensive turnovers(see Clemson 2009, see also the entirety of 2008), rather than poor defensive performance.

Underpromise, overdeliver, never give the opponent anything to use against you. I'd rather that than a cheerleader as a coach.

Big Jack Krack said...

It would be nice if BC could use a lot of Utah's offensive principles.

Get ready for some ultra conservative play calling - sure hope I'm wrong.

Dan said...

Ok back to serious comments I guess.

1) I think Spaz is great. His comments might be misconstrued at times but that's b/c he's honest which is rare in most high level sports. His approach is one that smart recruits and more importantly parents of smart recruits will love as evidenced by our current recruiting class which is still filling up and is better than what Jags brought in even when we were winning 10 games and going to conference championship games.

2) Call me crazy but I think Spaz/Tranquill are not TOB offensive conservative. They just played with what they had. A strong O-Line, a talented RB and a QB that is very much still learning and makes bad decisions. I also think there will be at least 2 trick or at least un-BC like offensive calls this game.

3) Nice of Carrol to show up to the press conference in a hoody while everyone else was in suits. What a d-bag.

Before Dan changes his name to PornKing, let's remember one big idea that has to happen before all this second tier bowl game smoke clears--until BC wins big, and by that I mean a National Championship, we will never get respect for our football program--moderate praise, yes, but respect--no. The reason ND is still respected, despite their pathetic recent history, is because they won the big prize. We love Flutie because of his Heisman trophy--as well, as for his great BC charisma. If he had come in second to Bernie Kosar, he'd be an after-thought for most people. We'd love him, but there would be no statue.

If Spaz says he has his goals set on a BCS crown for the Eagles down the road then we should stop this playground bitching and understand that his goals are serious and we have to support the guy. He doesn't have ten years to pull this off--it's got to happen sooner than later.I respect his moderate comments about the knockout--I sat thru the Colorado vs. BC bowl game in which we were DESTROYED in our worse loss ever. Last year we got popped by Vandy and had Herzy, Raji and Brace on the field. Those were knockouts. Why would Spaz pop off about our pseudo-greatness when it hasn't reached that place where one talks? BC has a great defensive mind for a head coach--a professional who wants to win games and reach the "Higher ground" of the sport. Pull quotes from the media are to be managed carefully. Spaz knows this. What matters is what goes down in the Emerald Bowl, because this game does matter in all kinds of ways--especially for recruiting and the BC resume.

BC is in a Bowl Game that people will want to watch--it's not Podunk College vs. Wannahootchee State-- it's BC vs. USC. It's a big deal because ESPN will go nuts when the Eagles Beat the Trojans. Feel it?

Go Eagles!! Beat SC!!

Opening bomb was to Larmond. One of several big play balls he dropped or him and Shinskie misconnected on. There is a little spark in Poppa Tranqs somewhere.

Apparantly McKnight is back practicing with SC but not fully cleared yet.

Foodie,

Overdeliver on what?? On minimal pre-season expectations by people who have shown year in and year out that they don't know what they are talking about with BC (the media) and you? Who actually listens to them?

We won 8 games against terrible terrible teams. Many of those games we almost blew and needed huge stops by the D. By the players on D, after the defensive genius of McG/Spaz let some of the most horrendous teams drive on us.

Did we overdeliver this year, as you state? No. If we beat UNC/VTech/Clemson then I might agree. ND was a result of turnovers and I will not place the blame on the coaches. The D played great that game and kudos to the scheme (however frustrating)

CT said...

we won 5 games in a bad conference.

we beat no one better than us.

we were humiliated by the two teams with some skill, who lost to better teams themselves.

usc will beat us.

beer on me for all atlanta eagles if i'm wrong.

spaz is right...we're playing for the next two yrs.

of course, i said that last yr for the bball team, which should be better than it is...but i'm still hopeful...maybe it's the season...
