F off Brian Bennett

I know many BC fans dislike Heather Dinich, but her colleague and Big East blogger Brian Bennett proved himself to be a pompous dickhead windbag. Here's what happened, Bennett decided to post a mailbag about Big East expansion. With the BE coaches whining about their short schedule it makes sense to address the topic. However the floated mega conference or ACC poaching will never happen. Bennett knows -- or should know -- this. When challenged by a Bob V (occasional photographer for this blog) this is what happened:

Bob V. from Washington, D.C., writes: Did you actually talk to any BC fans? I coordinate all the game watches for BC alumni in DC, and have never, EVER heard anyone express displeasure with the ACC or a desire to return to the Big East. BC's biggest Big East rivals were Miami and Virginia Tech and the Clemson series has been a hugely popular success. Besides that, academically the ACC is a much stronger fit. Why would we want to play Louisville and Cincinnati? This is not the first time you have raised this, and not the first time your column seems completely out of touch with facts and reality.

Brian Bennett: Ah, yes, the storied rivalry that is Boston College vs. Clemson. I bet that gets pretty heated at the ol' office water cooler, because so many BC and Clemson fans work in adjoining cubicles. It's been known to tear families apart. And enjoy your bowl trips to Boise and Nashville, even after you play in that hugely popular ACC title game. That move to the ACC has worked wonders for the Eagles, all right.

So instead of answering Bob's valid question on what BC fans think, he mocks him and brings up the water cooler debate. Excuse me but the water cooler bullshit is one of the lamest straw-men out there. Unless you work in some place in Boston filled with BC grads and alums, there is no water cooler talk about BC football. That doesn't happen if we play Rutgers or West Virginia or Clemson or USC. The ACC wasn't about generating buzz. It was about money and stability and playing in a conference of equals. If Bennett doesn't know this or get this, he's dumb. The fact that he mocked Bob just means he probably put two minutes into his blog post. As for Nashville, Boise, et al bowl nonsense...our bowl situation wouldn't have been any better in the Big East. Turnout for Tampa? The Big East doesn't even have a championship game.

I guess I shouldn't get worked up over this stuff, but Bennett is wasting his time, his platform and his opportunity to do something cool so he can take cheap shots and be an internet tough guy/funny guy. I wish and hope ESPN holds their bloggers to higher standards. Thankfully we have HD.

First day and other links

It is just practice, but BC played football today! Not much news but some great pics in the link from bceagles.com. The best news was Clarence Megwa playing at full speed.

Surprisingly HD didn't put BC at the bottom of the ACC.

Forget the argument over whether or not BC is a good fit in the ACC or the lingering bad blood and just look at the financials. Do you think BC would give up money to return to the Big East? Especially with the looming ACC TV contracts? And the idea that Maryland would ever ditch the ACC is laughable.

Athletic Department's Annual Report and other links

BC Sports put up their Annual Report. Flynn Fund members already received a hard copy last week. It's mostly fluff with feel good stories from current and former athletes. Key takeaways:
-- BC still trails most of the ACC in athletic donations. We need to improve that
-- The trending on fundraising remains positive.
-- There is no shared info on a potential football practice facility.
-- There is a section on Conte Forum but no word on a new Heating/AC system, new seating configuration or improvements to the scoreboard/video screen/in arena ad space.

Atlanta Magazine finally posted their Matt Ryan article online. To read the entire piece you'll need to pay $.99. It's a good article with quotes from his crew in Exton and even has a shrink profiling Matt's perfectness. I cannot say it's worth a buck. I didn't pay since I got to read the hard copy in my dentist's office.

College Football News ranked BC at 48 in their preseason poll.

What I did this summer by David Shinskie

Our newest Eagle David Shinskie got his first real press as an official member of the BC football program. The Herald's take was pretty lighthearted and positive. It seems that the players have predictably started teasing him about his age. Shinskie's getting back into the flow of playing football and looking forward to getting hit again.

Shinskie even seems pretty open about the true difficulties of his new life -- the lifestyle and the classroom. The baseball lifestyle (sleep in, play at night, drink after the game, crash, repeat) and its endless summer vibe is gone. Now Shinskie has to be up and on the field at 6 AM. He also has to adjust to being a student again. The fact that he's sharing these challenges makes me optimistic. Maybe he does have the personality and maturity to make the most of this opportunity.

Crane cut and other links

Chris Crane's hope to become the next Matt Cassel or even the next Brian St. Pierre hit a bump in the road when the Colts cut him. This doesn't mean he can't catch on somewhere, but he's going to have to really impress at his next stop.

Deep into this article on the Lions, there's a discussion on Cherilus and how his struggles may have been predicted. While Gos' senior season was not his best, I don't think his play was as poor an Joyner describes.

Alumni basketball news and other links

Tyrese Rice signed with Panionios (a Greek club). It's probably not where he wanted to be, but it is a chance to make money and work his way into the NBA. If Rice needs a role model, he should look no further than Jared Dudley. Dudley has fought for every minute and is now a key piece of the Suns' plans. You can follow Dudley on Twitter.

Dickie V has BC just on the outside of the Top 25.

The football team raised $28,000 in the Lift for Life event Thursday. Congrats to them for working hard and putting on a good show. Also thanks to those who gave. Although the event has passed, you can still donate.

Respect for BC fans and other links

We need to get the Princeton Review folks on some bowl selection committees. Despite our travel reputation or the belief that we are more concerned with tailgating than kickoff, BC made the top ten in the Review's annual survey for “Students Pack the Stadiums.”

One of the ideas I've been calling for -- a bowl game at Fenway -- may be a real option. This article mentions baseball stadiums getting involved in college football. The reason I've always thought a bowl would work in Fenway is the novelty of playing there. Plus the limited capacity and city center location could make it sort of an event. Something that it wouldn't be in Foxboro.

Justin Tuggle is considered a redshirt freshman to watch.

Herzy is on everyone's mind. As mentioned in the SI article he's heard from everyone including Charlie Weis. HD promoted the Lift for Life event. Let's hope people put up pictures on Friday.

No Blaudschun at the ACC meetings?

Is Mark Blaudschun not at the ACC meetings? We are two days into the event and he has yet to file anything with his byline. He may be there and collecting background but the fact that nothing is making it online or in the paper is not a good sign. As most know, the Globe is facing huge financial problems and could be reducing travel expenses.

I have been a critic of Mark Blaudschun's BC coverage at the Globe but I would prefer poor coverage from the Globe as opposed to no coverage. Sarina Mathai had an article this morning. Perhaps there will be new voices on the beat. Let's just hope we get some articles with depth and the occasional breaking news.

At the Herald, Conroy posted a good piece that shows Spaz's sense of humor.

ACC Kickoff stuff and other links

Since it is not in my backyard this year, I couldn't make the ACC Media Days/Kickoff. Fortunately the ACC covers its own event well. You can see video of the interviews, see pics and get transcripts on the conference site.

Here are a few storylines to follow out of the ACC this year.

Matt Ryan is focused on improving off of his rookie season.

Consensus among the experts: BC will be 5th

There are a few optimists, but the average prediction from the experts has BC finishing 5th in the Atlantic Standings. Even Dr. Saturday, who certainly goes his own way on these things, fears the offseason was too much and BC will be at the bottom of the division.

Talking TV

I have received a few emails from readers who are excited about Comcast adding ESPN U to some basic cable tiers. That's good news for BC fans under any circumstances and this year is even more important with many of our games likely pushed to the U. But a bigger issue is on the horizon -- the ACC TV deal.

As you can read here, the SEC TV has set a precedent. The SEC deal also creates a problem for the ACC. The SEC cut a deal with ESPN first and therefore gobbled up value scheduling real estate and syndication partnerships. Now there is speculation that the ACC will partner with other conferences (perhaps the Pac 10 and/or Big 12) for some sort of network. We'll see if and how that would happen. No one is asking me, but instead of going the Big Ten route with a custom network, I would prefer the ACC leverage its assets and get a ESPN/broadcast/syndication package as close to the SEC's as possible.

It's not outlandish to think this could happen. The ACC has a few things over the SEC:
1. A more populous geography
2. More major TV markets
3. A better basketball product that translates better into national markets. As much as we tire of Duke-Carolina, that game gets huge ratings nationally. More than double any SEC basketball game would get.

As fans of BC and the ACC we shouldn't worry about access. We'll get to see more games on more channels regardless of how the negotiations work. But play attention to the $$$, since we want the conference to get as much money as possible. More money for the ACC means more money for BC and better sports for us.

Loscalzo speaks and other links

Good job by Eagle Action to get an interview with Strength and Conditioning coach Jason Loscalzo. I've been impressed with the way Loco helped reshape the team. I also want to emphasize the importance of the S&C position. He's one of the few guys who can work with the players year round. Loco's got a great rep and has been a key to our success in the post-TOB era. (Thanks to Brendan for the link suggestion.)

The sports journals are following our marketing efforts. Who knows if it is really driving sales though.

HD likes our secondary but doesn't think much of the special teams. Our coverage teams were ok last year, but I pray that our kick offs and place kicking improve. I don't think I can take another year of shanked kicks.

Shinskie's transition to college and other links

Although he hasn't even played a down, there has been a lot written about David Shinskie. This Fanhouse post deals with his transition to the structure of college football. What I found interesting in the piece though was Chris Weinke talking about the mechanics of throwing and adjusting back to the game. The first real test will be how the QBs react in the scrimmages. Most recall that the scrimmages were the final indicator that the Crane-Davis combo would not come close to filling Matt Ryan's shoes.

Great news on the medical front as Herzy's treatments are going better than expected.

Finally, word leaked out that BC may play Army in the new Yankee Stadium in 2014. I would be glad to see the Black Knights back on the schedule but having the game at Yankee Stadium doesn't do much for me. Playing them at West Point would be just as cool.

More BC athletes helping out

Players from the women's basketball team, the women's hockey team and the men's hockey team recently visited Boston Children's Hospital. The football players had a conflict and couldn't make it. These are the little things that I am glad BC athletes do.

Outsiders weigh in on BC and other links

Dr. Saturday has done a good job following the BC chaos this season. When it comes to the QB situation, he follow his hunches and predicts that Tuggle will emerge. The Doc is also covering the ACC all week and discussed the growing consensus that Florida State will win the division.

I think our DLine will be better than HD predicts. I also think our offensive line should be the best in the conference.

For some of us, our knowledge of BC history begins with the time we arrive on campus. This piece offers a good glimpse and discussion into BC basketball history. I don't debate the John Austin call, but I don't think the writer gave the '80s guards their due.

Rice's summer

Gene talks $$$

Everyone and everything is hurting financially. Once thought recession proof, sports has certainly seen a dip in demand and donations. There is plenty of belt tightening in college sports, and as Gene explained to ESPN, all schools have to make tough decisions.

In the article Gene talks of fairness and setting standards, but that ship has sailed in my opinion. Look at the easy to manage and regulate cost savors like coaching staff limitations and scholarship limitations. Yet schools get around both of those issues with huge salaries, veteran Grad Assistants and using prep schools and JUCOs as holding stations.

I am glad Gene has a platform and a plan. The entire university has been overstaffed for a long time. Tough choices should be made. But I also don't want Gene to use the economy to table long term needs like a permanent, indoor football practice facility and a full renovation of Conte.

Clarifying my Shinskie comment

My earlier comment about Shinskie raised more questions than it answered. When I said "less enthused" about Shinskie it wasn't so much about him. It was more about him being our last-minute savior. Now take this all with a grain of salt given that it is secondhand, and Shinskie has still only been involved with unofficial team workouts. Early word is that he's a good athlete, but certainly football rusty and not necessarily leaps and bounds better than Boek or Tuggle. He has the advantage of age on the other QBs but isn't a Paul Peterson/Chris Weinke studious, mature, boy scout type. Take that for what you will. I have hopes that he blossoms and it clicks (before Labor Day would be nice!). But like I said, my prediction is it will be a big success or a washout. I don't expect some long, drawn out, mediocre four-year career.

My take on HD's BC predictions

HD made three predictably predictable predictions about BC. Here is my take on what she wrote.

1. No middle ground with Shinskie. HD is optimistic about Shinkskie. I am less enthused based on early feedback. I think Shinskie will either be a great, great player who leads us for years or he struggles and is a nonfactor who doesn't hang around to ride the bench.

2. The running game will frustrate BC fans. We have the talent and a great Oline, but I think the new offense and untested QB will mean 8 in the box again and again, all in an effort to shut down the run.

3. The linebackers will be much better than people think. No doubt that Herzy and a gimpy McLaughlin won't be replaced easily. But I actually think the talent in place and the scheme will help the LBs exceed expectations.

Rettig roundup and other links

The Rettig commitment generated some good press in California, in Boston and among the ACC.

HD thinks our QBs are the worst in the conference. We really don't know what we have. I actually quibble with the top of her list and think she overrates Lewis and Ponder.

Rice played well in the Wizards' summer league game against the Cavs, but Dan Steinberg wonders if the team needs an undersized 2 guard.

I mentioned this on Twitter, but I think the ACC TV deal is a huge story that is under the radar. The conference will try to get SEC type money but faces economic and football challenges. Fortunately ACC basketball will help improve the overall deal. With donations and ticket sales down, BC needs the revenue from a TV deal now more than ever.

Finally some good news on the QB front as Chase Rettig committed to BC. Like Boisture I expect other schools to keep recruiting him, but he has decent offers now and still wanted to come to BC. That is a good sign. Below are some links and video.

In the days following Herzlich's announcement, many of us wondered what we could do to make a difference. It didn't take Mark's teammates long to decide how they were going to help.

Boston College Uplifting Athletes to Host Charitable Event to Benefit Ewing’s Sarcoma Boston College football players to participate in the “Lift For Life” on July 30

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Members of the Boston College football team have officially launched the newest chapter of Uplifting Athletes, a national organization that works with college football players to fund rare disease research. Shortly after Mark Herzlich (Senior, Linebacker) disclosed his battle with Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare form of cancer that typically affects young men, Ryan Lindsey (Junior, Wide Receiver) rallied his teammates to take advantage of the position they are in to make a difference.

The Boston College Uplifting Athletes inaugural event will be the “Lift For Life” on July 30 at 6pm. Fans are encouraged to attend this fun-to-watch strength and conditioning competition to show their support. At least 60 football players are expected to participate, including well known veterans such as, Montel Harris, Wes Davis, Matthew Tennant, Rich Gunnell and incoming freshman. Donations can be made online at www.upliftingathletes.org. Mark is currently undergoing chemotherapy treatments, but hopes to be able to attend this unique event.

"It's humbling for me to learn that not only are my teammates supporting me, but that my situation has inspired them to do something that will help a lot of people facing similar challenges," Mark said. "I’m looking forward to seeing everyone at Lift For Life and personally thanking them.” “As soon as we heard about Mark’s battle with this rare disease, we wanted to do something,” explained Ryan, the Boston College chapter president. “I was familiar with Uplifting Athletes from some of my friends that play [football] for other schools and they put me in touch with the executive director, Scott Shirley. The coaches were supportive of the idea so we met with Scott and he helped us get started. We often talk about BC guys being different. The initiative these guys took to promote and organize the event is an example of how truly different they are. Support them if you can.

Bosco pipeline continues and other links

One of the challenges of coaching changes is losing continuity with recruiting territories. Fortunately we've kept our pipeline to Don Bosco open with our latest commitment Steele Divitto. Steele was recruited as linebacker and gives Spaz another much needed body into what should be a large recruiting class.

BC released their annual Football Media Guide today. You can click around on the PDF version here. Congrats to BC Sports Information for putting out another great book.

There was a decent amount of banter on the message boards about the depth chart. Don't read too much into any of it. The key position -- QB -- won't be settled until close to kickoff and will probably drag into the season too. Due to rotations, depth charts for most of the defense and WRs is also unimportant. The real interesting area will be left guard. Right now Emmett Cleary is listed above Richman. I expect a few other guys to be in the mix there too.

Other areas of interest include the usual history and stats sections as well as the full bios of the new coaches.

Regardless of whether you read every page or just skim it, the best part of the media guide is that it is one more reminder that the season is approaching.

Rice's summer league plans and other links

This writer thinks Tyrese Rice can build off of his summer league opportunity with the Wizards. I actually think the Wizards were a bad choice. Like the link says, their summer team is guard heavy. But more importantly, Rice needs to be on a team that has an idea of how to use him. Despite his size, I don't think his game or D translates to being an NBA point. He needs to be on a team that shoots 3s and has good floor spacing (like Orlando this past season). If JJ Reddick can get good minutes on a playoff team, there is no reason to think Rice cannot do the same. He just needs to find the right fit. I hope Washington is it, but I think they are just his first step towards Europe.

Bleacher Report thinks Reggie Jackson is ready to step up and fill Rice's void.

Even with the outdated information in this link, it looks likes you can still bet on BC for six wins this season.

Not much going on Tuesday but there is a short link to BC's latest recruit Andre Williams. Williams has so so offers and no recruiting ranking to speak of, but he hopefully will bring some nice depth to the position.

Hockey drafts and other links

Very slow news weekend around BC sports. The primary event was related to all the Eagles that took part in the NHL Draft. Five of BC's incoming freshmen were selected. That's a ringing endorsement of the talent infusion arriving on campus. The only downside is to wonder how long the NHL will let these kids hang around Chestnut Hill before trying to turn them pro.

HD produced her list of players who didn't make her Top 30 countdown and there still aren't many BC names on there. Not much respect for our secondary or Rich Gunnell.

I try not to get emotionally involved with recruiting, but will be rooting for Alexander Amidon (Spaz's latest commitment). He's one of the rare DIA products from my high school alma mater Hotchkiss.

Boisture told the Detroit media he really liked BC but the distance and his connection to Michigan State made him change his mind. Blaudschun had some of the same news.

Two steps forward, two steps back: Boisture to MSU

Any question as to why we went so hard after Josh Bordner was answered today when Joe Boisture confirmed that he dropped BC and will play for Michigan State. This rumor had been floating for a few days. Toss it up to the fickle nature of high school kids. This happened under TOB. It happened under Jags and will happen to Spaz in the future.

I don't think anyone in the football offices cares about my opinion, but Boisture is a reminder that you have to sell BC for what it is. You cannot sell the coach or the depth chart. Those things might work but they can get kids to your school for the wrong reasons. You have to sell the total package at BC and spend that much more time IDing the right kids for the program. Best of luck to Boisture. I am fine with Bordner.

Providence news (via Twitter) and other links

No official word from BC or Providence, but PC coach Keno Davis announced via his Twitter page that BC and Providence had signed a contract for a 10-year series between the two schools. Great new all around. The Providence game adds some consistent strength to our non-conference schedule and it continues one of the most important basketball rivalries the school has. Let's hope that in addition to continuing the series, BC puts some added emphasis around that game so that our newer and younger fans realize the rich history between the schools and get excited about the game. BC using custom marketing to sell tickets

We bemoan many of BC's marketing efforts, but you have to give them credit for this campaign. (Fill in your information and see what happens. I promise, it is harmless and not some internet scam.)

I don't know how many more tickets this will sell. The good news is that it will get attention. The phone message also plays up the option of customized ticket packages.

Marketing aside, I think the economy, low expectations and the lack of Notre Dame or Clemson on the schedule are going to be tough to overcome.

Leetch to the Hall and other links

Former Eagle Brian Leetch was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame. Leetch arguably had the best NHL career of any former Eagle. During his time with the Rangers he of course won a Stanley Cup but also received individual honors like Calder Trophy, the Conn Smyth Trophy and was a two-time winner of the Norris Trophy.

Incoming hockey player [CORRECTED] Chris Kreider will probably be a first round pick in the NHL draft.

Boomer Esiason son Gunnar will attend BC this fall. Gunnar's long battle with cystic fibrosis means he won't play football. Will Boomer become our latest celeb parent fan?

Baseball stats and other links

Great job by fellow BC blog BC All Access putting together this series on BC baseball stats (part 1, part 2, part 3). Short, to the point and fresh. This is what good blogging can be about. It will be interesting to see how our baseball team changes as the caliber of recruiting improves and we get the new field.

Fenway on ice and other links

The Bruins will play in Fenway as part of the NHL's Winter Classic. Now reports are surfacing that BC will also play in the old ballpark. This is all still unofficial, and I don't know who the opponent would be (BU is likely). We also don't know if this would be a double-header with the Bruins game or be a separate ticket. Regardless, it should be very cool.

This writer doubts that Rice will even get drafted.

Andy Katz mentioned Holy Cross' interest in Pat Duquette.

Check out the quotes in the second half of this article on BC's new basketball recruit Kevin Noreen. The ACC analyst gives the classic broken clock line when criticizing:

Still, Oettinger wonders if the Eagles can thrive if they’re only bringing in diamonds in the rough.

“It catches up with you sooner or later because sometimes they are no better than what the rest of us think they are,” he said.

Is this guy serious? If one team consitently found talent despite what everyone else thought, I wouldn't predict that their luck would run out. I would start to wonder what they know or do that no one else does. But that's just me...

Another QB joins the fold

A few weeks ago we didn't have enough QBs. Now -- dare I say -- we have too many. BC just received a commitment from another high school QB. Like Boisture, Josh Bordner, is a big, pro-style QB. However, he could end up in another position before his career is over. Regardless, I am all for the "see what sticks" philosophy. Spaz needs to find a solution, so give everyone a shot. The only downside to that strategy is you risk losing the one guy you really want. But at this point, that is a risk worth taking.

Future QBs and other links

I am thankful that Dave Shinskie fell into our laps during a time of need. But when I read stories like this I wonder what any of us can predict out of the situation. I don't get the vibe that Shinskie is a football guy who always longed to get back to the gridiron while toiling in the minors. The way he explains it, it seems like it all just sort of happened to him...he doesn't even know why he was released. Now let's hope his physical and emotional maturity makes the difference. This is his last chance.

Although he has committed to BC, future Eagle Joe Boisture is hitting the camp circuit. He's also showing his competitive side and impressing when among the best QB recruits in the country.

Will Rakim Sanders test the NBA draft waters next year? This writer thinks so.

BC guy Charlie Davies scored a crucial goal as the U.S. advanced in the Confederations Cup. Inserting Davies was the smartest move Bradley has made in the tournament.

Notre Dame fans are already predicting victory for our game in October. When will they learn?

Robert Vardaro is Spaz's latest commitment. He's a local kid and plays in the ISL at Phillips Academy. While not a high profile guy, he's got the size and you have to trust the staff on early offers.

His hometown paper caught up with Pat Duquette. The news from the article is Duquette outlining the recruiting strategy:

we're going to try to take four [players] in each of the next two years," Duquette said.

Given how he explains it, I am guessing they are counting a transfer or two.

The New York Times has been pumping out their team-by-team previews for a few weeks now. I thought it was a good time to check in on some of our opponents they've covered. Here are their thoughts on Virginia and Kent State.

HD says that if Herzy were healthy, he would have been No. 2 in her ACC player rankings.

Brian Toal and Dejuan Tribble were part of the inaugural UFL Draft. It will be interesting to see if the league ever plays again or if our two alums get on the field. Last word was Toal's shoulder was a major problem with every NFL physical he took.

Not sports related, but BC won the city's approval on the expansion plans.

Scouting report on Rice and other links

Things have been quiet on the Tyrese Rice front lately. He's worked out for various teams and most projections have him going in the second round. This writer thinks he will go undrafted. But despite that gloomy projection, he's got good things to say about Rice's upside.

Bruce Feldman wrote a post on some of the international players who are gaining attention of college recruiters. One of the focuses of the piece is Mehdi Abdesmad. The DE has interest in BC.

HD started another series, this time filling the hopes and concerns of each team. With BC she thinks Harris gives us hope and the voids on D are a cause of concern.

BC Band rocks Boston

What's more Political/Celtic Punk than using a college marching band as back up? Very cool move by the Dropkick Murphys to invite the horn section to join them at a concert Tuesday. I am also glad BC's taking back this song. The Sox and Celtics started playing recordings of the Murphys' tune during their championship runs, but our Band played it live shortly after the Departed debuted. Once again, the Band represents. They've come a long way from my day where they kept doing Lion King medleys at halftime.

ACCCG in primetime and other links

The ACC and ABC/ESPN are moving the ACC Championship Game to prime time. The hope is that the new time slot improves ratings and attendance. TV ratings will certainly improve, but does anyone really think the evening kickoff will improve attendance? I don't think BC would have brought anymore fans if the past two ACCCGs had been in prime time. I also don't think a night game will generate any more interest among the locals. The key will always be the matchup. If a Florida team is involved or Clemson, then you will get a crowd. Otherwise, there will be plenty of empty seats.

I didn't note that HD ranked Castonzo as the 23rd best player in the ACC. It will be interesting to see if any other Eagles make the list. I actually think Tennant should be ranked higher.

Hoops schedule stuff and other links

Most BC fans have tossed this topic around already, but here is what Andy Katz had to say about our future schedule:

Pitt was approached about playing Boston College in the Jimmy V Classic in December in New York but the Panthers decided against the matchup. Pitt athletic director Steve Pederson said he wanted more of a national game. But there was another reason for his decision against the opponent. Pederson was concerned that there were stories written in Boston during the East Regional that it was Boston College -- a former Big East school now in the ACC -- hosting onetime Big East rivals. Pederson said he didn't want that to be the story again in December.

Since BC left for the ACC, the Eagles have played former Big East members Providence and St. John's. BC athletic director Gene DeFilippo said there are discussions about playing Villanova, and the Eagles are talking to Syracuse and Rutgers about playing again in football (they still continue to play Notre Dame, a basketball Big East member but an independent in football). DeFilippo said he doesn't see this as an issue. Pederson said the Panthers and Eagles will likely inevitably play. He said if there were no other opponents he wouldn't be against playing the Eagles. He also said he was thankful for the way the Eagles hosted the NCAA regional. The Big East said there is no policy against playing BC or any other defected school (Virginia Tech and Miami left the Big East before BC).

Pitt is expected to stay in the Jimmy V event. The rest of the field will be announced at a later date.

If Katz said it, it is probably true. He's well sourced on these things and if anything takes a proBC stance in his coverage. So it seems that Pitt still has some hard feelings about the Big East departure. One day this will all be behind us. The other news out of this was the potential games against 'Nova in basketball and Rutgers in football. The 'Nova game would be a great matchup and generate plenty of alumni interest. I am not as thrilled about Rutgers in football, but it is a convenient matchup in an important recruiting territory so I am not opposed.

Marc Colombo -- cornerstone tackle one day and frontman the next.

Carolyn Swords is one of the semifinalists for team USA. Of the current 15 members, only 12 will make the final team.

Is Phil Steele wrong about BC again?

Every year I pick up Phil Steele's preview magazine. Every year I then write about how Steele has predicted a down year for BC. This year, when the whole world is predicting BC's demise, Steele plays contrarian again and thinks BC will finish 3rd in the Atlantic. But his prediction deserves a big asterisk since he wrote the preview before the Herzy and Davis news. Even without that factored in, here are some notes and nuggets from his review of BC that might give others optimism.

-- He ranks our offensive line 11th nationally and considers this the best BC line in five seasons.
-- He predicts we will face East Carolina in the EagleBank Bowl (Washington,DC). Based on our turnout for the Maryland games, we might actually sell tickets for this game.
-- Steele doesn't think much of the ACC, ranking the conference 5th overall.
-- Harris, Claiborne, Tennant, Castonzo, Albright, Ramella, McLaughlin, Davis and Gunnell made one of his various all ACC teams.
-- Two of his power forecasts (formulas which haven't been revealed, but are assumed to lean on returning starters and close games) called for BC to win the division. Steele also admits that BC has finished higher than his forecast for three years.
-- Steele thinks we are better at Head Coach but worse at the two coordinator positions.
-- Steele's formula ranked our special teams as 110th overall. Any surprise?
-- We are the 63rd most experienced team in football and the 6th most experienced team in the ACC.
-- BC has the 47th most difficult schedule this year.

Don't put too much weight into what Steele writes about BC. I use his guide to learn more about our opponents and for the historical betting lines, but never take what he writes as the bible. Let's just hope that the year he is finally right about BC!

New title for Duquette and other links

Skinner's longest serving assistant Pat Duquette is now the Associate Head Men's Basketball Coach. That's a promotion from his previous title of assistant head coach. I don't know if this changes any of his responsibilities. Regardless, Duquette has been a key to BC's success and I am glad he got this bump. My guess is the opening at Holy Cross motivated BC to lock down Duquette. This also makes him a likely candidate to succeed Al whenever Al decides to hang it up.

That wasn't the only Skinner news...BC also picked up their second 2010 hoops commitment in Minnesota Forward Kevin Noreen.

Lowered expectations and other links

The Sporting News doesn't think much of our chances this season. Both of their experts see BC taking a major step back this year.

The Globe caught up with our "QB of the future." A few interesting points for those who haven't been following Boisture as intensely as some of us have. He still plans on enrolling in January. The good news about that is that it leaves a much smaller window for another team to poach him. Also, he credits his relationship with Mike Siravo as part of his decision. I think too often fans put all the recruiting focus on the head coach, but in reality, the assistants do much of the bonding and salesmanship.

Quinton Porter seems happy and ready to succeed in the CFL.

I am a relatively late adopter to Twitter, but it is growing on me. I definitely prefer it to Facebook. If you don't want people telling you about their trip to the gas station, you can stop following them. However, if you want one depository for quick updates from say BC, BC sports information, your favorite writer or some news site, you can aggregate it all into Twitter. Tony Sanchez is a great prospect, but it looks like his willingness to sign quickly and play in Pittsburgh factored into their selection. The Pirates had nothing but great things to say about Tony.

I don't think HD realizes that Central Michigan will be a tough game.

More on Shinskie from the Globe and his hometown paper. After my initial giddiness, I've come back down to earth about Shinskie. I don't know if he is the answer, but I do think one of our QBs will be good enough to get us to the postseason.

-- Shinskie is more than a year older than Matt Ryan. Shinskie DOB May 4,1984. Ryan DOB May 17, 1985.

-- Paul Peterson was only 23 when he first played in 2003. Shinskie will be 25 this season.

Congrats to Tony Sanchez. Selected by the Pirates fourth overall, Sanchez is now the highest pick in BC's history. After all the controversy about overuse and misuse, BC's hero from Austin Mike Belfiore was selected 45th overall to Arizona.

Dr. Saturday found one of Shinskie's old baseball cards.

HD got some quotes from Shinskie and his high school coach. Needless to say, the coach is effusive in his praise and Shinskie as a recruit. He also echoes many of the things we've all been saying about an older player -- (better work ethic and physical maturity). The unsung hero in this process is Tight Ends coach Dave Brock. It was his relationship and network that put Shinskie on BC's radar.

UConn fans are still clamoring for a game against BC. As long as Gene is around, we can all forget it.

Former Eagle Matt Meyer is moving up through the Indians farm system.

Who is David Shinskie?

The never ending offseason took another turn last night when David Shinskie became the latest member of the 2009 recruiting class. "2009?" you might wonder. "Didn't BC finish up recruiting for the '09 class in February?" Technically yes, but this late addition is headed to campus, and will enroll and practice with the team this summer. But his arrival is not the only unique aspect of the Shinskie story. Our new recruit also happens to be 25 years old and will compete for the starting QB spot this season!

Shinskie was originally a member of the 2003 recruiting class (the same one that gave us Paul Peterson and Matt Ryan). Although he had BCS offers, he signed with DIAA power Delaware. But before he even played a down with them he was selected in the fourth round of the MLB draft and signed with the Twins. After toiling in the minors for six years, he hung it up and decided to give football a try. His selection process this time around was pretty short and BC's offer and depth chart were inviting enough for him to commit shortly after visiting.

No one knows what we are getting in Shinskie. He hasn't played organized football in six years. The good news is that the track record of baseball washouts as QBs is decent. In addition to their physical maturity, the baseball guys often bring a work ethic and perspective that makes them that much better. Aside from taking up a scholarship for four years, there is really no downside to Shinskie.

Even before his time in baseball, Shinskie was a decent prospect. Here are his 2003 profiles in Rivals and Scout. He played in a lower level of PA football, but was prolific and winning.

Give credit to the staff. They are trying anything that works. With all that has happened and all the gloom and doom, we still might surprise people yet.

Yet another QB twist

Dave Shinskie is now an Eagle and will be eligible this fall. The one time star turned baseball prospect has decided to get back into football. This offseason roller coaster never ends. I'll have more on this development later today.

Billy Flutie as QB and other links

Tuggle and Boek are the favorites to win the QB job, but Flutie is the only player on the roster to have thrown a touchdown. According to the latest, he is still in the mix for QB possibilities. At this point it sounds like Spaz is appropriately using the throw everything against the wall strategy. This is going to be an interesting season.

Kevin Armstrong wrote a great piece on the glory days of the Globe. One thing that is not mentioned is the Globe's history covering college sports. Did they have a BC beat writer in the 1970s?
